Exploring the cycling solutions for women

Date: Tuesday 21 July

Time: 14:00 – 15.00

Cycling numbers in Scotland have grown significantly during lock down. According to a BBC article, locations with automatic cycle counters have recorded double the number of people cycling.

This year’s Women’s Festival of Cycling takes place at a time when more women are giving cycling a go, bike sales are up, and Governments across the UK are telling everyone to cycle to work.

This session will explore how to seize this moment and keep women new to cycling on their bikes, as well as enabling others to take the next step.

With an expert panel, we'll explore cycling solutions for women to enable more to cycle, and help those already on bikes to keep cycling as a part of their everyday life.

Our expert guests include:

Aneela McKenna  -  Scottish Parliament Diversity Inclusion and Wellbeing Manager, Go Where Scotland Founder

Abigail Melton and Lilith Cooper - Gears for Queers Authors

Shona Black - Cycling UK

There will be an opportunity for Q&A with the panel.

It's safe to cycle - positive perceptions to increase women's cycling

Date: Tuesday 28 July

Time: 14:00 – 15:00

This year’s Women’s Festival of Cycling takes place at a time when more people are cycling - bike sales are up, more families are cycling together, and Governments across the UK are telling everyone to cycle to work. During the Women’s Festival of Cycling, we are looking at how we seize this moment and keep those women new to cycling on their bikes, as well as enabling others to take it up.

According to The Guardian, over two-thirds of people said their hometown would be a better place if more people cycled, plus 76% of women interested in cycling said segregated lanes would help them to cycle more.

This webinar, with a focus on Northern Ireland, will explore how we can help reduce the perceived fear of cycling on the roads, and what support women need to make more journeys by bike. By deconstructing negative perceptions of cycling safety, talking about confidence building for cycling on the road, and discussing actions we can take in our communities, we can enable more women to cycle on the roads and realise wider economic benefits

Our expert guests include:

Caroline Bloomfield, CEO, Sustrans Northern Ireland

Claire McLernon, Project Officer, Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland

Claire Mulvenna, Cycling and Walking Unit, Department for Infrastructure

Joshua Murray, Engagement Officer Northern Ireland, Cycling UK
