Sarah Wakefield is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2018 list for starting up MTB Divas and encouraging female mountain bikers of all abilities.

Sarah started the popular mountain biking Facebook page MTB Divas four years ago, following the birth of her third child. At the time Sarah was suffering horribly from post-natal depression, and felt that some form of social exercise would help.

Ever since, Sarah has run regular rides for ladies of all abilities in South Wales; she will accommodate everyone, from those who are new to mountain biking or haven’t been on a bike in years, to those more experienced and looking to be challenged.

Their sense of achievement is contagious.

Sarah has also recently qualified as a mountain bike leader and volunteers for British Cycling, helping to organise and run women’s mountain biking days.

Sarah says, “I love their faces! When they turn up for the first time, all scared and feeling totally out of their depth, to the end of the ride when they look like they’ve just regressed to 14 years old and been on the most exhilarating fairground ride! Their sense of achievement is contagious.”

Sarah nomination reads, “She's been open, friendly and has made every ride fun. I cannot thank her enough for the confidence she has given me, and now I've gone from timid to entering races left right and centre. I've come on so much because she gave her time and made me believe in myself… She gives her heart and soul into it, she deserves the recognition for it.”

Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling is an annual list celebrating inspirational women who are encouraging others to take part in this wonderful and life-enhancing activity.
