Sandy Boyd is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2018 list for founding a female mountain bike community in GirlBikeVan.

Sandy set up Cycling UK-affiliated GirlBikeVan in Cumbria in November 2016 to encourage more women into mountain biking. Sandy is especially good at getting beginners and those who haven't cycled in a group before out together. She ensures she has different grades of ride, so ladies of all abilities have rides they can attend, with all grades listed and described clearly.

One of Sandy’s riders told us, “I am not the most confident or able of riders and suffer with asthma, once quite badly on one of her rides. I've never been made to feel bad – in fact the opposite. The atmosphere on the rides is amazing, and I've never seen Sandy without a smile on her face. I attempt things I normally wouldn't, even getting over a long-time nemesis.

“I know for certain that there are some ladies who now love riding in a group, or even in their own, that wouldn't have dreamt of it before, and in some cases, may never have even tried mountain biking without Sandy's encouragement.”

Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling is an annual list celebrating inspirational women who are encouraging others to take part in this wonderful and life-enhancing activity.
