Laurie’s Pedal for Your Medal challenge
Raised in a cycling family in Derby, Laurie’s love for two wheels began early – first from the comfort of a bike trailer and child seat, then mastering his balance bike and finally pedalling confidently on his own bike by the time he was just three and a half.
So when Laurie heard about our Pedal for Your Medal fundraising challenge, he was eager to get involved. The chance to earn a medal certainly caught his attention – but it was the opportunity to ride with purpose that made it even more exciting.
With help from his mum, Sarah, who registered on his behalf, Laurie set himself a goal: cycle 10 miles during the month of May. Thanks to the support of generous family sponsors and the wonderful cycle paths around Derby, Laurie hit the ground pedalling.
Whether it was rides to nursery, detours to the playground, trips to local cafés or longer weekend outings with Dad, Laurie was unstoppable. He even joined his mum and his new baby sister on their walks – cycling alongside them.
By the end of the month, Laurie had not only completed his goal – he doubled it, finishing with 20 miles under his belt!
Laurie’s fundraising raised £130 for Cycling UK – 130% of his original target. His family couldn’t be prouder, and rightly so: 20 miles is an impressive total for a four-year-old!
Laurie’s story is an amazing reminder of the freedom and joy that cycling can bring.
His efforts will help more children discover the same excitement, independence and fun that cycling offers.
Well done, Laurie! You truly pedalled for your medal.
