Our response to the government’s Better Connected Transport Plan
Commenting on the publication of the government’s Better Connected Transport Plan, Sarah Whitebread, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Cycling UK, said:
“For years, people across the country have needed a national transport strategy that joins up our fragmented system to expand travel choice and make journeys safer and more affordable. This affects everyone, but particularly women, who often drive less, yet also feel less safe walking, wheeling or cycling.
“This new plan is a welcome sign that the government has listened and recognises both the safety concerns women have and the essential part cycling plays in creating well-connected places. The government’s shift to focus on people, over the vehicles they use, and the broad range of measures that support this are welcome too.
“However, the delivery and scale of funding required to join up our transport network remains a challenge. The success of this strategy will largely depend on sustained political commitment across the country over the next few years, and we’ll continue to work with politicians to make the best case for better joined-up journeys.”
