Nancy Waine is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2018 list for spreading the word about the lesser-known benefits of cycling.

Nancy cycled as a child, and a little when her own children got bikes, but never really got into it. It was death of her sister, aged just 56, in 2012 that made her realise she needed to start living life to the full. Nancy started cycling again initially just to lose weight, but soon realised the social, mental and emotional benefits.

Nancy says, “I quickly became part of a wider group of people, who all had a backstory, lots of whom had experienced sadness and tragedy in their life, but cycling enabled us to free some of the constraints that daily life ties us down with. It’s the sense of achievement, enjoyment, a feeling of belonging and the friendships that have blossomed as a result that truly make me happy.

“It really doesn't feel like exercise. It's more about making friends and enjoying the simple things in life: good conversation, seeing our beautiful surroundings and eating cake!”

Today, Nancy leads guided rides and Wheel for All sessions for Cycling Projects in Warrington and is an HSBC Let's Ride Leader in a voluntary capacity.

Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling is an annual list celebrating inspirational women who are encouraging others to take part in this wonderful and life-enhancing activity.
