Best practice in engaging disabled people in cycling for active travel
Cycling UK’s award-winning Inclusive Cycling Experience, funded by the Motability Foundation, helped more disabled people experience the benefits of cycling by removing barriers that could make it difficult to get started or keep riding.
The programme provided access to the right cycle, practical support and inclusive spaces to ride, helping people build confidence and experience the benefits of cycling for wellbeing, independence and connection with their communities. It also explored how cycling could be made more accessible for people who faced barriers to using a standard cycle.
The report, Best practice in engaging disabled people in cycling for active travel published in 2025, brings together evidence and learning from the Inclusive Cycling Experience to explore what helped make cycling a realistic and accessible option for more people. The findings highlighted the vital role of inclusive cycling hubs, alongside the importance of providing access to non-standard cycles through loan schemes. Together, these approaches helped remove barriers and open up cycling to people who may previously have thought it was out of reach.
The report shares practical evidence and insights from the programme, demonstrating how the right support, equipment and environment could help more disabled people experience the freedom and benefits of cycling.
