Wold Newton and Conishome 11th October 2026
Cycling UK Louth’s Sunday Ride to Wold Newton and Conisholme
11th October 2026...
Another chilly start to the day with temperatures below 10 Degrees Celsius but with light winds and almost unbroken sunshine, the temperature would eventually rise to a respectable 14 Degrees. Perfect then for a ride into the Wolds. Or so today’s ride leader thought.
Meeting up at Louth’s Leisure Centre were John Rickett, Harvey Wright, Ty Harness, Rob Cook and Tim Newbery. Chris Owen had arranged to meet up enroute to Wold Newton.
Tim had prepped his Boardman road bike but at the last minute swapped to the E-Crossfire. Only a short distance into the route near Brackenborough, both John and Rob altered Tim to a distinct wobble of the rear wheel. Troubleshooting, a broken spoke was discovered and a buckle was developing. Should have taken the Boardman after all! Would it survive the ride?
Today’s route to Wold Newton was an ascent up to Boswell Road via North Ormsby. The vale looked particularly fine in the sunshine, shadows of the lumps and bumps of the Deserted Medieval Village particularly evident today.
John took the now mandatory photos of those reaching the top road and then a breather before continuing to the crossroads with Salter’s Lane. Not far from here, we’d meet up with Chris and then a pleasant ride to Wold Newton Village Hall noting an increasingly large number of cyclists going in both directions.
Upon arrival at the Village Hall, it was clear that there was little room to be had both indoors and outdoors, the fine weather having brought everyone out and about. Coffee and cake is very good value but perhaps a little too busy for us today. At least there’d be another refreshment opportunity at Conisholme.
One more climb now to Hawerby with classic views down and over the middle and out marsh, even sighting shipping heading towards the mouth of the River Humber. From here, downhill and a backwind led to a swift traverse of the Grainsby Estate and along to Tetney.
Rob opted for a route along the A1031 to Conisholme which he would go onto report had been resurfaced and proffered a very smooth ride. The remainder continued first to Tetney Lock where we bade farewell to Chris, before themselves joining the A1031 at North Coates.
A re-grouping at Appleby’s Ice Cream Parlour with time for an enjoyable chat over coffee and for Ty an ice cream cone.
On departure Ty would tackle Fen Lane which leads to Alvingham (a green lane by the wind farm) but as this was where Tim had probably broken a spoke yesterday he'd continue with the others via South Somercotes.
Arrived back into Louth about 2 pm with Tim's rear wheel just about surviving. 41 miles for the Louth Contingent.
For Tim and Rob, one last coffee at the Leisure Centre along with a very fine slice of home made ginger cake. Sorry you missed out John.
Many thanks to all for the company.
