Wold Newton 13th April 2025

Group of people riding
Cycling UK Louth ride to Wold Newton Sunday 13th April 2025.
Many thanks to John Rickett for the report!

With Tim having sought the sunnier and warmer climes to be found nearer the equator, well Cromer actually, the hardier members were left to sort themselves into an orderly rabble and tackle the published route. Wold Newton is always a popular destination with its very reasonably priced fare of coffee and cakes.

Meeting up for a 0930 departure from the Meridian Centre were Alan Hockham, Ty Harness, Martin Wood and John Rickett. The outbound journey was via Brackenborough, Utterby, North Ormsby and then a push up the hill against the westerly wind to the top road before turning right and more or less coasting down to Wold Newton.

By dint of superb timing, Sven Livesey met up with the group from the direction of Boswell just as they were recovering from the climb. Not long after crossing Salters Lane, Chris Owen was also spotted, having cycled in from Cleethorpes, so now we were six.

Arriving at the Village Hall at around 1030, Paul Reynolds was already sipping a coffee at an outside table. Not really being large enough for a group of seven, and with all the inside tables occupied, the group retreated to the shed, plenty of room there and out of the still quite chilly air. With so much variety of cake on offer, its quite difficult to make decisions, however they were eventually made and a pleasant 45 minutes was taken consuming the cakes and the coffee refills continually plied.

Time to leave and with it a farewell to Sven for his return to Binbrook, hopefully escaping any punctures this time, the remainder could enjoy the benefit of a back wind and downhill run through the Grainsby Estate, and onto outskirts of Tetney where the group said good bye to Chris.

Turning right onto the A1031, still quite a lot of assistance was gained from the wind until the group reached Grainthorpe and Fen Lane. It was a push straight into the wind to Yarburgh, then a bit easier through Alvingham, Keddington and back to the Meridian Centre, arriving at 13.50 having covered 33 dry miles.
