WICKENBY
Ride Leader and Ride Report: John Rickett ...
With the BBC forecasting a zero percent chance of rain before 3pm, a moderate breeze and temperatures up to 20C, a good day was in prospect for our planned ride to Wickenby airfield. The Supreme Leader had advised that he would be partaking in a charity ride from Gainsborough so it was that three hardy souls gathered at the leisure centre - Ty Harness, Harvey Wright and John Rickett.
Undaunted by our small number, the group set off for the climb up to the Bluestone Heath Road, down into Donnington on Bain and up once more to Caistor High Street. With the wind from the SW the going was a little tougher than usual, however the rising temperature made for a pleasant ride and we were soon over the Wolds and onto the flat land which is East Barkwith, The Torringtons, Holton cum Beckering and finally Wickenby.
Do we, don’t we, sit outside? The wind was a little cool given that no energy would be expended sipping coffee so an inside table was chosen. A contingent of the Grimsby Wheelers (or similar name) were already enjoying breakfast along with a few motorcyclists, happy to sit outside in their warm, protective clothing, but no moving aircraft were evident. Three did land while we had our break but unfortunately there was no spectacle of wing walking as we had seen for the last two occasions.
Refreshed, the little group set off for Wickenby village and Lissington knowing that the wind would now be in our favour for the journey home and quite rapid progress was made. Even the climb up to Sixhills seemed easier and with time on our side it was decided to stop again at Ludford Magna’s Viking Way café. Sheltered by the trees it was pleasant enough to sit outside, however a few spots of rain were felt, this wasn’t what the forecast had predicted. Though we made good progress with the wind through Great Tows, Kelstern, North Elkington and Fotherby, we must have been sat under and following the cloud as the spots of rain continued.
All in all though, Cycling UK Louth platoon showed their mettle with 47 or so miles clocked up.
