Cycling UK Louth 'Wednesday Wander' 10th September 2025
Ride Report: John Rickett.

It was a case once again of playing Billy No-Mates, don’t worry I’m getting used to it.
Half anticipating that I’d be the only one to turn up for the Wednesday Wander, I’d pre-loaded our usual route to Horncastle. The morning weather was good for riding, if a little blustery, but the quest for today was to get back before the forecast early afternoon showers arrived.

The outbound route took the most southerly of the climbs out of Hallington, which meant a satisfying whizz down Red Hill. From there the route took in Goulceby (through the ford for a bit more excitement), Hemingby and onto Horncastle market place for a cup of coffee at the Costa café along with a cinnamon bun - purely to provide energy for the return journey. Of course.
While seated in the market place munching away, I spotted that Just One More Bike had changed its name to Pedals and Paws, or perhaps this was long ago and I’d simply not noticed before.

Recharged and ready to go, the return journey was via Fulletby, Belchford (the wind helped a bit with getting up the hill) then onto Oslear’s Lane, Maidenwell and Little Cawthorpe, arriving back at the Leisure Centre at about 1 pm.

Another coffee and then the final dash back to Fotherby, arriving just as the first drops began to fall. In the end the showers came to nothing so the pace could have been relaxed a bit – these weather forecasts don’t get any better!

Its that time of year and the farmers were out cutting the hedges, the wind depositing the clippings over the road in a number of places. I really thought I’d be lucky to get through all this fresh stuff without picking up a thorn but Allah, or was it St Schwalbe, was being very kind and I was guided through without incident.
