Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Waltham Windmill 5th August 2026...

Weather looked fine with a pleasantly warm 23 Degrees Celsius although a strong and blustery westerly wind was forecast to gust to 35 mph! 

Meeting up at Louth’s Leisure Centre were John Rickett and Tim Newbery. Chris Owen had hoped to meet up with the riders at Waltham Windmill, ‘Back to Basics’ Café being today’s destination. 

Taking the anticlockwise option of today’s route would give us a flattish ride through Brackenborough, the Covenham’s, Fulsow and Tetney and we were greeted by several solo cyclists heading into town. Hedgerows luckily gave us considerable shelter from the increasingly blustery wind and also the occasional dust cloud being stirred up by agricultural machinery working in the drought baked fields.

For once we’d follow Station Road to the A16, wondering if the Golf Club Café had re-opened. A Fecebook Page suggests that the ‘Greenkeepers Inn’(established March-April 2026) is currently serving food and drink every day from 08.00 am. Breakfast’s until 12 noon.

One to try out before long.

Just before the A16 and next to the old railway crossing, the upturned tall-boy bomb left over from WW2 is still in residence! Reputedly this bomb came from the scrap compound at RAF Waddington.

Following Cheapside, we soon arrived in to Waltham with just a short leg to the Windmill, arriving at ‘Back to Basics’ just before 11.15 am. We were delighted to be joined by Chris and we sat outside admiring the newly renovated windmill. It certainly looked spick and span and the café owners indicated that final millstone cleaning had been completed at the weekend and that the sails would very soon be turning again to resume stone-ground flour production.

For Chris, a tail wind all the way back home to Cleethorpes, for John and Tim a stiff headwind and a climb up to East Ravendale. Not quite as tough as anticipated and the route via Petterhills was enjoyable with splendid rural scenery all the way to Wold Newton. We’ll be back here on Sunday.

The wind briefly turned fully in our favour at North Elkington with the added bonus of a downhill swoop past the Dales to Little Grimsby. A decision was made to enjoy a final cup of coffee at ‘Betty’s’ as subsequently John needed to take his bike into Louth Cycle Centre for minor adjustment. Arrived back into Louth at 1.30 pm having covered 37 miles. Temperatures 23 Degrees Celsius, with local airports all reporting winds of 30-35 mph.
