'Steady Saturday' Covenham 26th July 2026
With the weather set fair all morning, Ty looked forward to the ride to Lissington for 'Yoga on the Lawn with Afternoon Tea', whilst Tim had volunteered to lead the alternative ride to Covenham where the fortnightly 'Sailability' was taking place at the Sailing Club. Meeting up with Tim at Louth's Leisure Centre were Chris, Sue and Martin, whilst James would join us in town. ETA back to Louth 11.30-12.00 noon.
Skies were largely blue although a brisk westerly wind was setting in, forecast eventually to gust 30-35 mph. Never the less it was an enjoyable start to the day and we greeted a number of other cyclists passing on by. A drinks break near the Little Beck at Brackenbrough was taken after which the pace was slowed with plenty of time to admire the scenery, the farmers still working hard in the fields judging by the plumes of dust from machinery brining in the harvest or preparing the ground for the next crop.
Another pause by the Covenham Community Café where there's a charming bench, secluded in an increasingly enveloping hedge. Although the village hall is having some work done, it's still open every Thursday for refreshments (11 am till 2pm) whilst the next monthly 'Breakfast Club' is on Saturday 1st August (9.30 am till 11.30 am).
The gates leading to the Sailing Club were open today and we were greeted by the volunteers at the café. Hot drinks and cake or a doughnut for £1. Plenty of wind too for the sailing lessons which entertained the visitors whilst Martin and James discussed the the finer art of fishing.
Refreshed, time to head back to Covenham before turning off along Yarbugh Road taking us to Alvingham and a stop at J Shaw to purchase fruit and veg. Continuing along Alvingham Road, James pointed out a memorial celebrating the generations of the Shucksmith farmers of White Barn Farm and the Atkinson family.
Arrived back into Louth at 11.45 am having covered 16 miles. Temperatures a warm 23 Degrees Celsius. Many thanks to all for the company.
