Saltfleetby 2nd July 2025

Cycling UK Louth Wednesday Wander to Saltfleetby 2nd July 2025:

Having been blisteringly hot on the Monday with temperatures of about 30 Degrees Celsius, in marked contrast today’s high for our ride was to be just 17 Degrees. Additionally, depending on which forecast could be trusted, scattered showers or longer spells of heavy rain were the order of the day.

Never the less, there would be an excellent turnout with Tim Newbery, Ty Harness, Paul Linder, Martin Wood, Steve Croton and John Rickett all ready and eager for the ride at the Meridian Leisure Centre.

We headed out to Alvingham Lock with grey skies, patchy rain and a brisk nor’easter; much as had been expected. A fine start with Tim Leading through the Cockerington’s to Red Leas. We’d once again delight in the finely resurfaced Saddleback Drain before arriving at the Little Village Tea Shop and Café at Saltfleetby.

The skies were by now leaden and the rain more persistent so time indeed for a refreshment break. A variety of Fayre was served promptly and consumed over amiable chat and catch up on news, hearing of Steve’s and John’s exploits on the various side to side adventures.

On departure, the rain not only had become more persistent but also heavier. A decision was made to ride to the Long Eau at Thacker Bank (Three Bridges) and choose a shortened version of the ride back to Louth via the Carltons.
Having only recently discussed the virtues or otherwise of satellite navigation devices, Tim for the first time ever had inadvertently pressed some buttons which had enabled a ‘Pothole Warning’ alert. This alert was triggered several times every mile and Tim resolved to disable this facility as soon as he got home upon perusal of the manual.

Steve would head for home at Great Carlton whilst Paul and Ty opted for a short hop over to Mimi’s Mission at Manby before their eventual return via Aby and Alford. Thankfully, the rain did eventually ease by the time Tim, Alan and John had reached Legbourne and the ride to the Leisure Centre proved uneventful.

Arrived back at about 1 pm having covered 25 miles. John would end up with about 10 miles more, whilst Paul and Ty would go onto clock up the highest of the group. Top temperature during the ride of 17 Degrees Celsius as had been predicted. Here’s hoping for something better for our ‘Summer Picnic’ on Sunday.
