Saltfleetby 25th March 2026
Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Saltfleetby 25th March 2026
A shortened version of our usual ride to Saltfleetby had been devised by John Rickett, in light of the very windy conditions and the chance of squally showers by around 1 pm. Refreshments to be taken at the Little Village Tea Shop.
Tim Newbery met up with John at Louth’s Leisure Centre and with no one else appearing, departed at 10 am for today’s ride. Well wrapped up for the below seasonal average temperatures, we were soon enjoying a brisk backwind along Red Leas Lane. Sightings of March Hares but birdlife a little sparse, presumably sheltering from the wind.
Howdales Road and North End Lane, increasingly subsided with surface cracks visibly lengthening over the last few months, led us in double quick time to Saltfleetby Saint Peter. The weather was surprisingly pleasant with largely blue skies and bright Spring sunshine giving welcome cheer. The duo arrived at the former school well before 11 am and enjoyed freshy baked scones and pots of tea and coffee.
For our return to Louth, John had suggested taking Three Bridge Lane where the surface remains one of the best in the region. Reaching the small Hamlet of Three Bridges, we crossed over the Long Eau, a rather fine chalk stream that rises near Little Cawthorpe. From here we’d turn more westerly in direction and for John on his Eddy Merckx, this required increasing effort as we made our way to the Carltons.
As we noted on Sunday, the fields where Rapeseed has been planted as a winter crop are starting to turn a vibrant golden yellow, the Brassica’s four-petaled flowers coming into bloom, hastened by last week’s warm sunshine.
Arrived back at the Leisure Centre at 12.20 pm where John had promised Tim a cup of coffee and a finger of Kit Kat if we escaped the showers. Luckily for Tim it was still sunny on arrival. Thanks John.
30 miles for John in blustery conditions, a good trainer for future Portuguese adventures.
