Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Mablethorpe 2nd September 2026...

With the route devised by Cycling UK’s planner, the choice today was a ride to the seaside on this first Wednesday of meteorological Autumn, the idea being no to get entangled with Tour Of Britain’s Stage One which would head out to Binbrook and Kelstern from Lincoln (see Ty's Report and photographs). 

The weather forecast for several days had indicated a wet day, or at least a wet morning. However, on arrival at Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre, John Rickett had assured that it should be dry until about 2 pm whilst Rob Cook had suggested closer to 1 pm. Tim Newbery had plumped for 11 am. We would soon find out who was closest.

With Tim feeling a little under the weather he had decided to take the advantage of a little assistance which with a brisk westerly wind wasn’t actually needed on the outbound leg. 

Rob led the way for the first number of miles, the group winding their way through Stewton, Legbourne and the Carltons at a brisk pace. So far so good. Warm and dry with a little brightness.

No gliding was in evidence at Strubby Aerodrome and indeed the roads were relatively quiet as we made our way through Beesby and Hagnably. Not far now to the South Promenade Pullover and our arrival at Coral Café (although it might be noted that the nearest wild, natural tropical coral reefs are located in the Red Sea some 2,500 miles away!) 

We almost had the café and seating area to ourselves, although there were a few families enjoying a final day or two holidays by the sea playing on the golden sandy beach. Many thanks go to Rob for purchasing mugs of coffee, scones and bacon baps. 

Past 12 noon now and still dry with Tim’s prediction falling by the wayside.

Our return leg would have us initially cycling along the cycle path on the promenade as far as the Pullover at Quebec Road. Some mounds of sand to navigate but on the whole easy enough, passing by a number of cafés, although not all highly rated by Steve.

Approaching Theddlethorpe and the skies rather than darkening actually brightened with warm sunshine increasingly breaking through. We were now on the route on tomorrow’s Tour of Briain Stage Two starting at Boston and finishing at Skegness. A few potholes had been filled but the junction at Three Bridges will need some care and attention. Luckily the Pro’s won’t need to tackle North End Lane at Saltfleetby which continues to subside where deep fissures and sunken levels are making cycling increasingly difficult.

By now, John had taken the lead looking as relaxed as ever but eventually waiting at Eastfield Road for the group to re-assemble. Farewells were made with John heading home whilst Tim and Rob headed to the Leisure Centre for one final coffee. Arrived back a little before 1.30 pm having covered 36 miles. Still no rain.
