Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Mablethorpe 29th July 2026

Originally scheduled to be a ride to East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre, a forecast of 32 Degrees Celsius at the airfield resulted in a change in plan and a ride to the seaside instead where a more manageable 26 Degrees was predicted for Mablethorpe.

Meeting up at Louth’s Leisure Centre were Rob Cook, John Rickett and Tim Newbery. 10.00 am and temperatures already a warm 24 Degrees, ETA back into Louth 1.00 pm to 1.30 pm.

Setting off at a brisk pace, our route took us to Stewton and Legbourne, making our way through a couple of road works. Wind assisted, it was a ’breeze’ all the way to Withern where we were expecting to meet up with Steve Croton. Instead, Paul Linder would be lying in wait by the Village Hall bench.

Continuing through the village to Stain Lane, a message from Steve confirmed that he was on his way and the workmen controlling vehicles through a section of ‘re-dressing’ had kindly arranged to direct him through the road works.

Not far now to Seaview Café where we regrouped, with all of us arriving by 11.15 am. A shaded table was secured to enjoy a chat and take welcome refreshment, temperatures rising to 26 Degrees.

This part of the beach was busier than when we had last visited a few weeks ago and it’s been a popular visitor attraction for decades. Indeed, this was one of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s favourite places to visit, the family renting a cottage for the summer holidays in the 1820’s, 30’s and 40’s. The cottage still stands today. 

Departing at 11.45 am, Paul and Steve would head for home to leave the remaining trio of Rob, John and Tim to continue to Theddlethorpe All Saints and Gayton Engine. Noting a change to a headwind, the breeze never the less proved essential to keep ourselves from getting too hot as there was quite a heat rising from the tarmac. 

Arrived back in Louth at 1.00 pm, exactly the same as last time, but today Tim would stop off at the Leisure Centre to enjoy an ice-cold banana milk shake. Delicious. Temperatures had by now risen to a hot 28 Degrees. 33 miles covered by the Louth Contingent. Thanks to all for the company.
