Louth to Ulceby via Wold Newton 9/8/26

Louth to Ulceby via Wold Newton training/recon. ride for the forthcoming Barton upon Humber longest ride of the year.

Starting today at 9.00am from the Merdian Leisure Centre: Tim Newbury, John Rickett, Steve Croton and Ty Harness.  A Meet up was planned with Chris Owen somewhere along the Boswell Road.

The forecast was relentless Sun and very high UV levels for the 5th heat wave of the year but there was a cooling NW wind.  The group made its way into the wolds via North Elkington and travelled along the Boswell Road and over Salter's Lane indeed finding Chris. We all arrived  to a bustling and crowded Wold Newton Village Hall at 10.10am.  The once-a-month cafe is very popular with walkers and cyclists.  We all had coffee and cake and were soon back on the bikes heading up through Ravendale, Beelsby, Hatcliffe where we would say goodbye to Chris Owen.  Then onwards to Swallow to pick up SUS TRANS 1 to Great Limber before switching to the Brocklesby Road.  It's then just a short 20min ride to Ulceby.  The group piled in to the "Chums" cafe where two other Cycling groups were enjoying a feed.  The service was first class and the food is legendary because of their very generous proportions, see photo below.

Then it was only a matter of riding the reverse route to see if we could get back to Wold Newton Village Hall before they closed-up shop at 2pm.   We did see a lone rider on SUS TRANS 1 heading north who (we think) was Trevor Halstad - Gainsbourgh CTC.  The group did in fact make it back in time for more coffee and cake. John Rickett then headed back to Fotherby and the remaining group traversed down through North Ormsby, Utterby, Ings Lane and Brackenbough.

We were all back in Louth for 3pm.  It was a hot day....
