Heatwave ride to Redbourn

On the road in Ayot Green

The choice of the Waterend Barn in St Albans as a meeting point seemed to work well as there were eleven riders at the start. The weather forecast was for a very hot sunny day so it was good to leave St Albans along the shady Alban Way cycle path. We went to the end of the cycle path then headed north through the Salisbury Village housing estate on the old Hatfield Aerodrome before going through Lemsford and the edge of Welwyn Garden City. We reached the Spoke Cycle café near Codicote just as Steve H was leaving. Apparently, he’d gone directly to the cafe and not ridden with the rest of the group. The café was very busy and we sat out the back looking at the tiny kid goats and a rhea. After coffee some riders left the group to return home before the day got too hot, while the others rode to lunch in Redbourn at the Hollybush pub. The lunch venue was changed to ensure a shorter ride back in the heat. Well done Bernard for planning and leading the original ride and planning the ad-hoc diversion.
