Spring 2024 Newsletter - Cycling UK East Midlands Region

Welcome to the spring edition of our seasonal newsletter. One of our aims is to liaise with member and affiliated groups and other groups promoting cycling in all its aspects across the East Midlands Region. This newsletter should give a flavour of the number and range of activities happening this spring across the region and to help promote events such as organised rides, rallies and fundraising events for charity.

Firstly, an update on the Waterside Bridge, the proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Trent between Trent Basin and Lady Bay (West Bridgford). Planning applications have now been submitted with the project being led by Nottingham City Council, working in partnership with Rushcliffe Borough Council and in consultation with Nottinghamshire County Council. This link across the Trent will be welcome to both local and touring cyclists and we would urge cyclists to submit supportive comments on the council websites (deadline 22nd and 25th February). Full details can be found HERE.

Our member and affiliated groups in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire were busy with a full programme of rides and events throughout the winter, with the Mince Pie Run at Belton on 17th December a notable highlight. About 300 visitors and participants attended and a magnificent £1700 was raised from refreshments, donations and the tombola. This has been donated to the Rainbows Hospice for Babies, Children and Young People.

Looking forward to the spring season, our member and affiliated groups in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire have a full programme of rides and events.

The following are just a few examples:

ALFRETON

Alfreton CTC organise monthly Audax events and their spring series of rides begin with a ‘Wicked’ 200k event in March followed by ‘To the Chapel’ 300k in April and the ‘Moors and Wolds’ 400k in May. See the Audax website for full details.

LEICESTERSHIRE and RUTLAND

The 33rd Annual Sulley Rides (30k/50k/70k/100k) take place on Sunday 17th March. This event is held in memory of David and Doreen Sulley who were Cyclists' Touring Club members and the originators of the rides. These traditional ‘reliability’ rides are open to everyone.

The start and finish will be at Lutterworth Town Hall, Market St, Lutterworth LE17 4AT, where refreshments will be provided. More details HERE.

LINCOLNSHIRE

The annual ‘Lincoln Imp’ 112k Audax takes place on Saturday 27th April. See the Audax website for full details. A cycle camping trip to Rutland Water is being organised in April with a ride as part of the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival in May.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

At the time of writing, there were still a few places left on Nottinghamshire CTC’s Charnwood in the Spring Audax on Saturday 27th April. All profits go to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. The closing date is 15th April or earlier if the maximum of 200 entries is reached. See the Audax website for full details.

COMMUNITY CYCLE CLUBS

Community Cycle Clubs are at the heart of Cycling UK’s aim to bring about sustained change and to encourage more people to cycle. It’s great to see a number of such clubs flourishing in the East Midlands.

Lauren Baker, Cycling UK’s Development Officer-East Midlands, has more details on Cycling UK East Midlands Facebook Page.
