Autumn Newsletter

Autumn Newsletter - Cycling UK East Midlands Region

Welcome to the Autumn edition of our seasonal newsletter. One of our aims is to liaise with member and affiliated groups and other groups promoting cycling in all its aspects across the East Midlands Region. This newsletter should give a flavour of the huge number and wide range of activities happening this Autumn across the region and to help promote events such as organised rides, rallies and fundraising events for charity.

Additionally, our member and affiliated groups in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire have a full programme of rides and events throughout the Autumn.

The following are just a few examples:

DERBYSHIRE

Alfreton CTC: A 200 km Audax “Straight on at Rosies. 2”, on Saturday 17 September. A new version of an old favourite. Controls at Saundby, RSPB Blacktoft and Gainsborough. Full details on the Audax calendar.

CTC Derby and Burton: The traditional 100 mile ride to Skegness from Derby takes place on Saturday 10 September.

LEICESTERSHIRE and RUTLAND

This event is held in memory of Howard Naylor, Keith Lakin and John and Phil Allen and is run in conjunction with Charnwood Cyclists’ Touring Club. Entry is free. Full details at www.ctc.leic.org.uk

LINCOLNSHIRE

Cycling UK Louth will be supporting the DS Smith Family Charity Ride on Sunday 18 September. There’ll be a choice of 15, 30 and 50 mile routes starting from Alvingham. All proceeds go to St. Barnabas Hospice.

125 Years Old

Congratulations to Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Member Groups who celebrate their 125th anniversary.

Following the decision to allow the formation of ‘District Associations’ in January 1897, at the monthly council meeting held on Saturday 14 August 1897, the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) Council resolved – “Item, 165 – That the council do hereby sanction the formation of a District Association for the County of Leicester. Item 166 - That the council do hereby sanction the formation of a District Association for the County of Nottingham”.

Big Bike Revival

Funded by the Department for Transport, events for Cycling UK’s ‘Big Bike Revival’ are ongoing. The aim is to make cycling accessible to everyone.

Following on from a successful summer programme of events across the East Midlands, ‘Women in Tandem’ based in Nottingham will be continuing their Wednesday Women Only bike rides throughout September (there’s free coffee and cake!) and there’s the Big Bike Revival Dr Bike at AMC Gardens, Nottingham on Saturday 10 September.

Lauren Baker, Cycling UK’s Development Officer-East Midlands, has more details on Cycling UK East Midlands Facebook Page.
