Walkerburn

Group ride

Event description

The ride on Wednesday 10 July is heading for a lunch stop at Walkerburn on the Tweed. It covers 69 miles with around 4800 feet of climbing. When we are south of the Midlothian conurbation i.e. for most of the time, we are on stunning quiet roads amid glorious Borders scenery. We'll hardly notice the climbing though we will appreciate the descents.

Please congregate in the car park of the Robin's Nest pub in Gilmerton Road at 9.50 a.m. for a prompt 10.00 a.m. getaway.

The outward route of 32 miles takes in the Granites and Innerleithen whilst the return leg of 37miles is by Caddonfoot, Clovenfords and the minor road to the east of the Gala Water , generally parallel to the A7. The detail of the ride is shown on mapometer at :-

On the morning's ride we'll have a toilet stop at The Lasswade Centre,  the loos in Bonnyrigg apparently being closed at present. As we descend the Granites we should meet up at some point with Fiona and Clive Hunt and some other members of the Borders Brakeaway Group who will guide us to the new section of the Tweed Cycleway downstream from Innerleithen, accompany us to lunch and stay with us for part of the afternoon ride.

There are open areas in Walkerburn where we can eat al fresco. There is however a cafe there, the Caberston Coffee Stop, where I plan to have a snack lunch . Early on in the ride I will take numbers of those planning to do likewise, and will ring the cafe to book. Borders Brakeaway riders will probably lunch in the cafe.

After lunch we head down the south side of the Tweed , crossing back north to Caddonfoot and then up to the Gala Water, Heriot,Crichton, Tynehead, Ford and Dalkeith. Most likely the coffee stop will be in Dobie's and late.

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees you. Please take note of my phone number 0778 6662943  in case you get separated from the group.

Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and tools.

In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse,  ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home. Having said that hopefully no-one would be left in a situation of not knowing how to get home .

An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning. The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members . However non-members are welcome to attend, but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

                              Regards

                                       Duncan
