East Lothian

Group ride

Event description

We will meet at Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh, at 9.50 am for a 10 am start. The lunch stop will be in Haddington where we can disperse for lunch to the numerous cafes and for picnic lunches, to benches with views of the river. The ride is practically all on surfaced roads and cycle paths.
Route Out. We will leave Musselburgh through Stoneybank on NCR 76, then on NCR 1 to Whitecraig and the railway cycle path to Dalkeith. We will only be on the cycle path for a short time before leaving and starting a gradual climb to reach the highest ride point of the day at about 250m. We start the climb on NCR 176 and quiet roads through Crossgatehall, Cousland (exiting on Southfield Rd), crossing the A68 and over the Whitehill / Edgehead road to gain the high point on an unnamed hill at the NE end of Camp Wood (overlooking Mayfield). A quick descent follows to Southside Farm, Edgehead and Ford. After a short climb we reach Pathhead and the Lion Gate of Preston Hall. Entering East Lothian we then travel eastward on mainly minor and rural roads and pass House o’Muir, West Saltoun and Begbie to reach Haddington for lunch (24 mls).

Route Back. After lunch we will leave Haddington eastward, again on quiet roads, and pass Hailes Castle to reach East Linton. We then change to a westward direction and pass through Markle and Athelstaneford and up to the Garleton Hills. After a short section on the busy A6137 we then descend from Bangly Hill, pass Coates Farm to reach St Germains level crossing. A descent follows to the coast road at Port Seton and we continue back to Fisherrow where the ride will end. (50 miles). There will be no afternoon tea stop.
