Dawyck

Group ride

Event description

The ride on this coming Wednesday will be to Dawick Botanic Garden which is a few miles south/west of Stobo on the B712.

We will meet at Fairmilehead/Charwood Grill at 9.50am so we can be on our way by 10am. We’ll take the usual way to Loanhead (toilet stop)

then onward to Roslin, Auchendinny, Penicuik and over the moor-road to West Linton. From here we take the minor road to Romannobridge

then going south along the Lyne Water to the A72. Here we go south/east for ca 3 miles  after which we turn right and we’re on the B712 which

takes us to Dawyk for our lunch stop.

At Dawyck Botanic Garden there is a picnic area and a café. Carry out drinks are available. (I’ll be bringing my re-usable cup).

If it’s busy at Dawyck, having lunch in the café might be slow.

The return journey is back to the A72 which we’ll cross and go over the Meldons to Edleston.. Here we turn left and ride north on the busy A703

for 2.5 miles before turning right onto a minor road until it joins the B6372. We’ll ride over to the B7026, turn right back to Auchendinny and Roslin.

We can have a café stop at Dolly’s in Roslin.

From Roslin we’ll take the cycle path east to join Gilmerton road.  We now  turn left and cycle to Robin’s Nest where the ride ends.

Total distance 61 miles.

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees you.  Please take note of my phone number 07941 353450 in case you get separated from the group.  Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and tools.  Remember to bring water, money for lunch and a bike lock. In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home.  However, no-one should be left in a situation of not knowing how to get home. An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning.  The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members.  Non-members are welcome to attend but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Kristine.
