Review: USE Components Vybe Duro Suspension Seatpost
Sussex-based USE Components has been making suspension seatposts for around 30 years and it shows in the Vybe. Aimed at gravel riding, it is suitable for rough roads and easy trail riding alike.
It’s available in three diameters – 27.2, 30.9 and 31.6mm – and two versions: the Vybe Duro (tested), which has 10mm of layback, and the inline Vybe GR.
The Vybe Duro’s clamp provides quick, easy and secure one-bolt installation and adjustment. It fits standard 7mm diameter rails. Clamps to fit other rails, including carbon fibre ones, are available.
The post is 400mm long and has up to 50mm of suspension travel. The buyer can choose from soft, medium and hard spring options depending on rider weight, with final tuning via a plug in the base that compresses the elastomer and coil springs inside.
At 460g as tested, the Vybe is around 100g heavier than the main opposition and substantially weightier than a rigid post. Its action is telescopic, so the saddle moves in line with the seatpost, unlike parallelogram linkage posts which move in a rearwards arc.
There’s some stiction in the movement of the sliding shaft, which requires force to overcome the grip of the weatherproofing ‘energised seal’ and get the shaft moving. This makes the Vybe less supple over tiny bumps than, say, Cane Creek’s EE Silk, which moves under the slightest pressure on the saddle.
In practice, this stiction turns out to have some advantages. The effect is similar to that of a blow-off valve, which prevents movement until some force threshold is met.
Where a saddle perched on an EE Silk feels a little rubbery thanks to its constant movement, the Vybe feels more stable in the same conditions and better at soaking up bigger hits. It does emit an occasional topping-out ‘thunk’ when recovering from a big compression.
The Vybe is completely rebuildable for servicing, with all spare parts available from the manufacturer.
Verdict
No-bounce bump suppression, proven durability, tunability and a superb finish make this UK-manufactured product a strong contender for most effective suspension seatpost on the market.
