If you’re looking for a durable, waterproof backpack that’s ideal for shopping and commuting but won’t break the bank, Pinnacle could have the answer. Pip Munday tested the Urban Backpack and now doesn’t leave home without it

The Pinnacle Waterproof Urban Backpack is a great all-rounder bag. It’s become my go-to for daily commutes, trips to the shop and even days out, both on and off the bike.

The 18L capacity is just enough to fit in my work laptop, a change of clothes, puncture kit and lunch. You may need something larger if you tend to lug a lot of kit about.

At first, the waterproof material was quite rigid and had an audible squeak, but this disappeared once the material became more supple. Similarly, I found the straps overly firm at first.

They are stitched quite closely together at the top, which I thought would rub on my neck. But again, as they softened up, I didn’t find any issue here.

There is minimal padding, yet I found that the bag sat comfortably on my back and could withstand a decent amount of weight with ease.

The waterproofing worked well. The contents remained dry when testing it in rainy conditions. The roll-top design is simple and easy to use. There aren’t any internal pockets, which can make organising things a little tricky, although this wasn’t a major problem for a bag of this capacity.

On the outside of the bag, there are reflective anchor points, which I found useful for clipping on additional lights, or attaching my helmet when off the bike. There is also a mesh pocket for a water bottle on one side, and an additional see-through pocket on the other.

This is intended as a touchscreen compatible pocket for a phone. I never used it; a small, external zipped pocket for quick access to items like keys or a wallet would have been more practical.

Verdict

This was the bag I didn’t know I needed but have used almost every day since it was delivered. I love the simple but sturdy design and materials. As a commuter backpack, it’s great value and robust.

Capacity 14L. Features a front zipped pocket for quick access to essentials. Sleek design but the basic straps and back panel don’t look particularly comfortable.
