Vote Bike: Cambridgeshire & Peterborough

Vote Bike: Cambridgeshire & Peterborough

On 4 May, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough will go to the polls to elect a new 'Metro Mayor'. Cycling UK and the Camcycle are calling on all candidates to support a set of three asks.

Context:

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is home to the top cycle city of the UK. Cambridge City has by far the highest rates of cycling in the country, with almost 40% of people commuting to work by bike. This undoubtedly contributes to Cambridge City having the lowest rate of recorded diabetes in the country and significantly lower than average rates of obesity in both children and adults.

However the rest of the region is not sharing in the success, with as few as 1% of people cycling to work in some areas. As a result, places just down the road from Cambridge are scoring below the country’s average in key health indicators.

What we're calling for:

To help the whole region share in Cambridge's success, Cycling UK and Camcycle have asked all candidates whether they agree (yes or no) to the following asks. You can see how candidates have responsed below.

  1. Ensure cycling is fully designed into all new roads projects
Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has lots of roads projects planned, the mayor needs to ensure that anysuch projects are built in accordance with Highways England IAN 195/16?
  2. Ensure cycling is fully designed into all new developments
Major developments are planned across the region, such as the building of 3,500 new homes in Peterborough. Cycling must be considered from the outset and planned for appropriately as per the standards set by http://www.makingspaceforcycling.org/
  3. Make cycling the easiest and most obvious choice of transport for all short journeys or parts of a longer journey
Support transport authorities in building cycle networks at a local level and ensure that all networks are linked to key transport hubs; and that key transport hubs have adequate facilities for cycling.

Cycling is an important mode of transport, particularly for those fortunate enough to live close to cities and have office based jobs.

The City Deal has large amounts of money to spend on cycling routes and I will encourage them to do so.

When new roads are built I will look in to the possibility of providing cycle routes alongside them.  I will also encourage developers to include cycle routes in new estates.

I am mindful of the popularity of cycling and it will be an important part of my vision for new infrastructure in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Although cycling levels across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are higher than the national average, and Cambridge is rated first out of all local authority areas, there is still a lot to do. We can improve cycling, particularly in rural areas as the £10m Greenways cycling project funded through the Greater Cambridge City Deal connecting villages across South Cambridgeshire to Cambridge has shown

Cycling is a key technology. Electric cycles and velocycles can transform urban transport. It is not effective to provide expensive infra-structure where cycles will not make a significant contribution, such as long distance routes.

As a former cycle champion for Cambridge City Council - I see cycling as a key form of sustainable transport - and value it as a component of an integrated transport system.
