Eve Berry is the youngest person on Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2018 list for being a special part of the Wirral Wheelers.

Eve comes from a cycling-mad family, and has been a helper at her dad Dave’s cycling group, the Wirral Wheelers, for four years. At events she’s been a friendly face at the lunch stops, helping out with the teas and cakes.

But last October, Eve became gravely ill. She’d had two faulty heart valves replaced as a baby and when it was time to have a new set at the age of 12, Eve’s recovery from surgery went badly wrong. She spent months in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital recovering from life-threatening complications, including a huge blood clot that sent her into cardiac arrest. After 18 weeks, including 18 days in an induced coma, Eve was finally able to come home in February.

Eve is still on dialysis and struggles with her mobility, but her commitment to her club has not been forgotten. In April, the Wirral Wheelers took on the Church Hill Challenge in her honour, and to say thank you to the team of medical staff who saved her. They are looking forward to having their youngest club helper back with them.

Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling is an annual list celebrating inspirational women who are encouraging others to take part in this wonderful and life-enhancing activity.
