Why do I need cycle insurance?

Cycling UK offers insurance for member and non-member cyclists, instructors, groups and event organisers. Find out why you might need insurance and the different policy options available.

Unfortunately, incidents do occur both on and off the bike. So for peace of mind, and to protect both yourself and your cycling possessions, you may want to consider insurance.

Cycling UK offers a variety of insurance packages through our trusted brokers and partners, specifically tailored for cyclists. Insurance can be a bit of a minefield, but our guide below should help you to understand the reasons why you might need insurance and the options available to you. 

1. Third party liability insurance

Included with Cycling UK membership.

  • Third party liability insurance covers you if someone else is injured by your actions; for example a pedestrian stepping into your path, or if you’re involved in an incident with a fellow cyclist (including other Cycling UK members).
  • It would also cover you if you have caused (or alleged to have caused) damage to someone else’s property – for example a car or a fence.

2. Cycling-related legal assistance

Included with Cycling UK membership.

  • If you have been involved in an incident that wasn’t your fault, it can often be difficult to bring a claim against those responsible for example, a motorist or a local authority in a pothole-related case.
  • Cycling UK's Incident Claims line team has extensive experience in helping Cycling UK members to get compensation and rehabilitation support on a no win, no fee basis. Members also receive 100% compensation, with no deduction taken towards their legal costs.

3.  Cycle insurance

10% donated to Cycling UK.

  • Our members helped to tailor CycleSure insurance - a specially designed product which covers your bike(s) against worldwide theft and damage, and includes personal accident and breakdown cover.
  • CycleSure donates 10% of the insurance premium to Cycling UK to help us continue our charitable and campaigning work.

4.  Cycling UK ride and event organiser insurance (organiser’s liability insurance)

Included with Cycling UK group membership​.

  • If you organise cycling activities on behalf of a club or a group - whether social, leisure or work-related - by joining Cycling UK, you will receive organiser’s liability insurance. 
  • This policy covers club officials, ride leaders, event organisers and other volunteers against any claims made against them as a result of their negligence.
  • Individuals within your group can then join Cycling UK on a discounted affiliated membership rate to obtain third party liability insurance.
  • Free special events insurance: if you register an event under one of Cycling UK’s summer cycling initiatives: Bike Week, Women’s Festival of Cycling or Big Bike Revival – you’ll receive event and ride insurance cover for free!

5. Cycle Activity Provider (CAP) Insurance

Cycling UK members save over 25%.

  • This policy is for cycling instructors and those providing or organising cycling activities.
  • Individuals would usually have a recognised qualification such as National Standard Instructor (NSI); or holders of Cycling UK's Mountain Bike Leader or Tour Leader awards.

6. Travel insurance for cyclists 

10% discount for Cycling UK members.

9.  Professional indemnity insurance

  • Cycling UK does not provide professional indemnity insurance.
  • If you require cover for a business such as: hiring out bikes; a cycle shop or maintenance business; or a holiday or tours company – please contact our brokers directly.
