Cycling UK launch new bicycle insurance offer

The good news from the pandemic was that many people bought new or dusted off old bikes and used them more, with Strava Metro noticing an increase in cycle journeys across much of the UK. However, the sad reality has been that this has also fuelled a rapid growth in bike theft, highlighted by Bike Register, which reported a 28% increase in thefts in June 2020 compared to 2019. Insurance has therefore become ever more important to cyclists.

Currently Cycling UK includes up to £10m third party liability cover within all their memberships. The charity however is keen to make sure their members have access to a wide range of other insurance products which will provide further protection for their cycling lives.

Georgina Cox, head of membership at Cycling UK, said:

"Cycling UK knows from surveying our members, insurance is extremely important to them. With a lot of cyclists insuring their bikes on home insurance we were concerned whether they all were getting the cover they need. Every policy is different and cycle protection is often only an afterthought from the provider with hidden pitfalls for the unwary. We therefore wanted to make sure our members are covered by a quality product that works for both them and their beloved bikes.” 

The charity has started working with Yellow Jersey and Pedal Cover which have two different approaches. Yellow Jersey are the market leader for stand-alone bicycle insurance. Pedal Cover is the first and only home insurer in the UK built specifically for cyclists. Cycling UK members have the opportunity to secure exclusive discounts with both, which includes £50 off Yellow Jersey annual policies and an 10% discount on Pedal Cover home insurance (an average saving of £50 per customer).
