And they're off... the Cardiff Cycle Challenge begins!

More than 1,500 people from around 80 different organisations across Cardiff are taking part in the Cardiff Cycle Challenge. And, because there’s still time to sign up, it’s hoped that even more people will join in.

What promises to be the biggest ever city-wide cycling challenge got under way in Cardiff this week.

From Monday 2 until Sunday 22 July,  teams are competing in the Cardiff Cycle Challenge.

The idea is that individuals taking part can cycle at a time to suit them, even if it’s only for ten minutes. To make sure their journeys by bike contribute towards their team’s success, they must record their rides on the dedicated website - www.cardiffcyclechallenge.org.uk

Those who register and record their rides stand a chance of winning some fantastic prizes, from a hot air balloon ride across South Wales, to a luxury spa day and a £500 bicycle.

All those riding for the first time in a year or more will automatically win a Cineworld cinema ticket.

There are a host of events to make it fun and easy to take part. Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell, will launch a Sustainable Travel event for Welsh Government staff in Cathays Park on Friday 13 July.

Cycling is an easy, enjoyable way to get active and the Cardiff Cycle Challenge is a great way to get started.

Dr Tony Jewell, Chief Medical Officer for Wales

Dr Jewell said: “I want Wales to be a place where people consider walking, cycling or public transport before getting in their cars.

He added: "Walking and cycling are great ways to incorporate exercise into your life.  Regular exercise is key in maintaining a healthy weight, staying fit and reducing stress levels.”
