Women's Festival of Cycling event: From Bloomers to Baggies and Beyond

As 2018 marks 100 years since women in the UK first won the right to vote, Cycling UK is celebrating the launch of our Women's Festival of Cycling with an event that will highlight the bicycle’s role in women’s suffrage. The event on Saturday 30 June takes place in Manchester. It includes an exciting line-up of speakers and activities aimed at exploring the continuing story of women's cycling from its earliest days when female Victorian cyclists started to develop their own styles of 'rational' dress to the present day bike culture.

The theme of the day is ‘Cycle Liberation’ #cyclelib. Our celebration provides the perfect opportunity for inspirational women from across the UK, including entrepreneurs, campaigners, mechanics, volunteer ride leaders, instructors, adventurers and cycling enthusiasts to come together to network with and learn from each other. There will also be fascinating workshops and an led optional ride!

We will also be honouring our 100 Women in Cycling 2018 for their outstanding contributions in encouraging other women to take part in cycling. We are delighted that cycle blogger and TV presenter Anna Glowinski will be joining us for the day to present a small token of appreciation to those of the 100 Women who will be in attendance.

Date: Saturday 30 June 2018
Time: Arrival 10am; event 10.30am-2.30pm; ride or activity 2.30pm-4.00pm
Venue: Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, All Saints Campus, Manchester, M15 6BBH
Cost: Free, refreshments included

How to register for the event

We are pleased to announce that registration for the event is now open to all Cycling UK members and supporters who are interested in learning more about the gender gap in cycling and meet a diverse range other women who are working hard to close it. You can also register by email. NOTE There is a limited number of tickets left and spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. We do hope you will be able to join us.

What else is on?

Manchester will be the centre of the cycling universe at the end of June so why not make a weekend of it? On Thursday 28 and Friday 29 June is the Cycle City Active City  conference aimed at those 'working to encourage utility cycling, walking and active, healthy lifestyles across Britain'. On Sunday 1 July there is the HSBC Let's Ride Manchester free cycling festival in the city.

Organise a Women's Festival of Cycling ride!

Cycling UK's Women's Festival of Cycling takes place throughout July 2018, with women-only and female-friendly rides throughout the UK. The first 50 organisers to register a women-only bike ride in July will receive some free goodies from Cycling UK to say thanks! Download a form to register below.
