Not only are CTC member groups enjoying a busy week promoting the joys of cycling - so, of course, are CTC regional staff.

Bike Week in West Yorkshire has, for the most part, seen beautiful weather and a noticeable increase of commuting and leisure cyclists.

CTC Development Officer Ginny Leonard has run a series of bike breakfasts, business park cycle events and a stunning 25-mile canal ride with a team of 12 from West Yorkshire Metro, where she is based.

With the Tour de France coming to the region in 2014 we hope this is the shape of things to come!"

In  Essex, Richard Monk ran the first of a regular Wednesday bike ride yesterday in Braintree to mark Bike Week. Richard said: “The new gentle rides are open to everyone, but mainly aimed at people who haven’t been on a bike for years.”

The rides have been funded by Active Braintree in association with Braintree District Council. The aim is to continue the Olympic Legacy and help people enjoy activities they might not have tried for some time. The rides are led by experienced ride leaders and people can progress to longer rides when they feel able.

Cllr Jo Beavis, Member of Active Braintree and Cabinet Member for People at Braintree District Council, said: “Now that the summer has finally arrived, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and get fit and healthy.

"We hope that these rides will be popular with Braintree residents and that people will feel the benefits of getting on their bike during National Bike Week.”

In Lancashire, families have been out cycling in Exton encouraged by CTC’s Damian Bonsall. He reported a great turnout for the five-mile route at the weekend.

There has also been much enthusiasm during Bike Week for the trail leaders' courses laid on by CTC at the Thornbridge Outdoor Centre near Bakewell and in Durham, where army cadets took part.

In Reading, there’s still a packed schedule for the rest of the week with a daily ride ranging from 18 miles to 60 miles.
