Are you up for Cycling UK's 2020 bikepacking challenge?

Cycling UK is encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy a night out under the stars at least once a month over 2020 – are you up for the challenge?

*** Update to the #12nightsoutin1year challenge in time of coronavirus - please see Terms and Conditions for further information ***

Spending time outdoors, in nature and in the green space is a well-known tonic to modern day life, and is necessary now more than ever.

The break from screens and their constant clamour for attention as you take time out in the slow lane is well documented for the benefits it brings your mental wellbeing, and as we find ourselves trapped indoors in an abnormal world, the outdoors is one of the few places which can feel normal.

Cycling UK is therefore encouraging us all to seek these benefits while combining it with our favourite physical activity: cycling.

Throughout 2020, the national cycling charity wants to see as many people as possible out and about and sharing their adventures on Twitter or Instagram using #12nightsoutin1year.

To help provide an incentive, each month there will be an award for the best picture summing up your overnight adventures.

In April, winner of the ultimate luxury for a night outdoors - an Exped inflatable pillow - was Instagram's @gilmouradam whose backyard bivi in the time of lockdown the judges felt summed up the desire to get away from it all, while also keeping to the necessary restrictions we all face. Garden camping was the order of the day, with runners up paulj and modopickle both showing you don't have to travel far to experience an adventure.

For May, the best picture submitted will win one of Cycling UK's best in test lightweight camping stoves, a Mini Trangia (rrp £32) - perfect for cooking up a trailside feast!

Cycling UK’s Sam Jones undertook the challenge in 2019 and has spent nights out each month so far in 2020 as well (in his garden recently though). He said:

“During lockdown the weather has been perfect for heading out for a night out beneath the stars - staying safe and indoors as much as possible has been crucial though for the UK's path to recovery. Despite this, it's been really interesting to see the ways people are still finding ways to get out and have an adventure even under such necessary restrictions.

"It's been great to see the pick up so far from the cycling community, who are really embracing the initiative and getting out on their own adventures from the beginning of the year in Wales and the peaks to Scotland, to now backyard bivis and the local trails. For May, I'm really excited to see what recipes and pics people come up with as they share the campcraft cooking pics. We've my favourite little stove on offer for the best pics - the Mini Trangia - which should hopefully provide a little extra incentive to get out there and cook up a feast."

Spending a night out in a strange place might seem a little daunting at first, but once you’ve given it a go, you’ll be hooked!

The charity understands that starting nights out under canvas and cooking outdoors might not be for everyone, and is therefore publishing expert advice on bikepacking throughout the year to help you get the most out of your nights out(doors).

From advice on how to set up tarps, trailside first aid and more, Cycling UK wants to give everyone with a bike and a spirit of adventure the know-how to make their own trips into the unknown.

If that sounds like you, then get involved and share your stories on social media using the hashtag #12nightsoutin1year.

“Spending a night out in a strange place - even your garden - might seem a little daunting at first,” says Sam. “But once you’ve given it a go, you’ll be hooked!”

Coronvirus update to #12nightsoutin1year challenge

With Government advice encouraging everyone to go out only for essential journeys and your daily exercise, while spending as little time inside as possible, Cycling UK is urging everyone to stop wild camping as part of their #12nightsoutin1year challenge.

That doesn't mean our competition has ground to a halt...instead we would love to see people be more creative and share pictures of living room campsite or private garden based experiences (if you're lucky enough to have one) with May's challenge being about sharing your best campsite cooking recipes!
