CTC member Mark Brummell killed in the New Forest
CTC was shocked to learn of the death of Mark, who was killed when he was hit by a car driven by a 59-year-old man from Christchurch, on May 28th.
The driver of the car has been arrested and released on bail on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. CTC's Stop SMIDSY campaign has been tracking cases like this to document how effective the criminal justice system is when it comes to the deaths of cyclists.
Mark was a prominent figure in the Southampton Cycling Campaign and had dedicated himself to repairing bikes. Mark's friends and colleagues have paid tribute to him in the Daily Echo, while a friend, Su White, has written a beautiful obituary.
The family are requesting no flowers, but donations to suitable bike charities as an alternative. The Cyclists' Defence Fund charity set up in 2001 by CTC has been suggested and agreed by Mark's brother as one that Mark would have approved of in its aims and actions. To donate to the Cyclists' Defence Fund please send a cheque to: Cyclists' Defence Fund, c/o CTC, Parklands, Railton Road, Guildford, GU2 9JX.
