About us

Founded in 1958 and serving Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas of Cleveland & North Yorkshire, we are a vibrant and active club. Membership currently stands in the high 300s and the weekly Sunday club runs attract up to 50 riders, split into several ability groups.

In summer there are midweek training/social rides, again split by ability and by what the group wants to achieve, whilst in winter formal training sessions are held at Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit (floodlit & traffic free).

A midweek TT series is held from spring through to autumn, culminating in a short hillclimb series (both open to members only). The club also organises a series of open TT and road races throughout the season. Our club race team placed third in the region in 2014 and many club members participate in open TTs and races, both regionally and nationally.

The club organises a number of challenge rides throughout the year as well as several "novelty events" and other club social activities. There is also a quarterly magazine "The Spokesman" available in printed and electronic format.

Cleveland Wheelers are a fully accredited Go-Ride club. Youth coaching sessions are held every Monday night at Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit, run by the club’s fully qualified and enthusiastic coaches. All are welcome to attend from 5 years and up and parents can bring their bikes and join in. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are available in the club house.

During the summer months April – September we run our highly successful youth racing league ‘The League 2000’. All ages up to 17 are welcome. There are three stages per round; Skills test, Time Trial and Handicapped road race with overall position based on the placings in each stage. The series has just completed its 18th year and regularly attracts 80+ riders per round.

All people, regardless of age, gender or ability are welcome to join the club and participate in any of the club activities. If you would like more information use one of the contact forms on the Contact Us page of our website.

Information about the group rides

Group rides take place every Sunday throughout the year (weather permitting). They start and finish at Great Ayton Tourist Information Centre (corner of High Street and Station Road). There is usually more than one ride:

Very steady ride (14mph, 30 miles) leaving at 9.30.

Fast ride (18 to 20 mph, 60 miles) leaving at 9.45.

Steady ride (17mph, 50 miles) leaving at 10.00.

Anyone is welcome to join us as a guest for one or two rides, but after that you will be asked to join the club. Please read our Ride Guide and FAQ before attending a club run.

In the summer months (May to September) rides also take place on Tuesday evening at 6pm (same start location). Group make-up and route depends on who turns up, but rides will always aim to end by 8pm.

In the winter, training sessions are held at Middlesbrough Cycling Centre from 7.30pm to 9pm. These are aimed not only at fitness but also at improving track skills and awareness with an aim to promoting the racing side of the club.
