What to expect

Ride Format

The ride involves about two hours of cycling, with an occasional rest stop. These rides are ridden at a moderate pace. You should expect to cycle up to about 20 miles (32km) at a moving average around 11mph (18kph). We usually arrive back to the Old Town by 9:00pm. There is often the option to socialise in a pub at the end.

Please remember we have to stay safe by adhering to current government Covid-19 guidelines

What to bring

As a minimum, you are advised to bring

  • A mobile phone with the ride leader's number in it.
  • Charged lights (at least 3 hours run time), suitable for dark lanes
  • Spare tubes, puncture repair, pump and tools for your bike. In the event you have a problem, assistance can be provided, if you ask. We won't be carrying spare tubes / tools for you.
  • A spare jacket / warmer clothing and gloves is also advised in the colder months or if rain forecast.
  • A drink and some snacks if you think necessary
  • A lightweight lock if stopping for a social afterwards

Aged 18 and over

At present these rides are for cyclists aged 18 and over who are comfortable with riding in a group and in the dark, so you must have lights for the ride.

Booking Essential

Ride limited to 8 riders. Where more than eight riders wish to join this ride, the ride will be split into as many groups as necessary. Please text or phone or email the Ride Leader as appropriate. Booking in enables us to keep a record of who is on the ride and allocate additional Ride Leaders if necessary.

Ride Leaders Wanted

Are you an experienced rider, used to riding at night?

We are always interested in hearing from experienced riders willing to plan and lead rides in lanes suitable for group riding at night.

If you are a Cycling UK member and you can

  • Plan routes of up to 20 miles, suitable for small groups at night
  • Are willing to lead those rides on Wednesday evenings between 6:45pm and 9:00pm. On Wednesday's that suit your availability
  • Know your way around a bike and could offer minor repair assistance (such as for punctures) to others in the group if requested.

Then please come along on a Wednesday evening ride, to get a feel for the format, and let us know if interested in planning and leading some.

Cycling UK continues to support the UK to cycle
This remains true during this difficult period with the ongoing threat of coronavirus Covid-19
