We are a small friendly group who use our bikes to get fresh air and exercise and enjoy the countryside in good company. You don’t need a fancy bike to take part; any roadworthy bike will do to start with. Many newcomers to cycling worry about whether they are fit enough to keep up, but we want you to enjoy our rides and the leader will adjust the pace to suit the participants so that you won't be left behind. Another benefit of riding with a group is that if you have a puncture or some other mechanical problem there are experienced riders to help you. We aim to offer rides for all abilities. South Bucks CTC is also part of Cycling UK and some of us also take part in their Midweek rides on Wednesdays and Coffee Pot meets on Fridays.
We offer a choice of led rides on Sundays, occasional cycling holidays and monthly social evenings from 19:30 at The Kings Head, Market Square, Aylesbury on the second Tuesday of the month. We have also enjoyed Christmas socials, a summer BBQ and a couple of quizzes; anything that members want that someone is willing to organise!
Recently we have had some bike workshop sessions to show members how to check and adjust brakes, gears and bearings. Other sessions are planned to explain route planning and navigation aids like GPS units.
We have a Facebook group which is a good way of keeping in contact with other members, asking questions and sharing cycling related information. You have to have a Facebook profile yourself to be able to see the page and to protect everyone's privacy it is a closed group. Having said that, all local cyclists, members and prospective members are welcome.
We have a Strava Club group where you can see where others are riding, find possible riding companions and get ideas for your own rides. If you are competitive you can see who is fastest up local hills and other route segments.
We have a programme of circular rides on Sunday mornings all the year round mostly on quiet rural lanes. The rides are all on-road and start from different places in Aylesbury and the surrounding villages, chosen by the leader to suit the direction that the ride is going. Many of the rides depart at 09:30, but leaders may choose to start earlier particularly if they have planned a longer ride in summer. There is no set starting place and time so you do need to look at our Rides List each time. You can view our Rides List here. Join our Facebook group.
The Easy Paced rides are typically 25-35 miles and the Moderate rides are over 40 miles, but often much more in summer. Our rides are for adults or accompanied teenagers but are not suitable for families. Distances always tend to put people off, but the Easy Paced rides are 3 hours of steady cycling with a 30-40 minute café stop to relax and chat. During the summer months we usually have a monthly Newcomers' Ride of about 20 miles of gentle cycling with a cafe stop; these are also shown on the Rides List. To keep the numbers manageable on the Easy Paced rides and enable to those who wish to progress to longer, faster rides we have introduced Step-Up rides as a bridge between EP and M rides, so we now offer a choice of three riders every Sunday.
The Rides List will give you the information you need to decide if the ride is suitable for you, such as starting place and time, 11's cafe, pace, approximate distance and the estimated time of arrival (ETA) back at the start.
We welcome new riders, who do not have to be Cycling UK members at first, but we recommend that newcomers try an Easy Paced ride first unless they are experienced cyclists. If you are not a member of Cycling UK, you will be asked to fill in a disclaimer form giving emergency contact information as a requirement of Cycling UK's insurers. Cycling UK members are covered by Third Party insurance and our leaders are also registered with Cycling UK and insured.
After three rides with us you will be expected to join Cycling UK, which you can do on-line here.
