Restarting of club rides

Restarting of club rides

I hope you have all been keeping fit and well in these uncertain times, and taking full advantage of the glorious weather to get out on the bike as much as possible.
You are no doubt aware of the latest Government Guidelines which allow groups of up to six people from different households to ride together, unless any of them have reason to self- isolate, and providing social distancing is maintained. As a result of this revised guidance, Cycling UK has taken the decision to allow group riding and the Third Party Insurance which covers riders will be valid providing the guidelines are followed.
The CTC Suffolk Committee has discussed ways in which group rides, within the limitations of the current situation, could be started up once again. We appreciate that not everyone will be comfortable to return to group riding, and we don’t want to encourage anyone who should perhaps be self-isolating or shielding, but we felt it important to have the facility available for those who are interested. The following proposals are only a temporary measure and, with the situation still very fluid, will need to be adapted in light of changing circumstances.
The proposals are that Thursday and Sunday Groups should be split into sub-groups on a geographical basis with a group coordinator for each group to arrange informal rides for up 6 people. A map of suggested areas is attached. For this to work riders would need to decide in advance if they wish to take part in a ride and contact the group coordinator. This is necessary to avoid more than the approved six riders congregating at the start point or refreshment stop, with the coordinator having the unenviable task of splitting the group or telling people they could not take part in the ride.
Initially, we are looking for volunteers to take on the group coordinator roles. This is not a permanent role and will, hopefully, become redundant when we can eventually return to normal club riding. Please contact either the Thursday (Thursdayrides@ctcsuffolk@gmail.com) or Sunday Rides Coordinator (Sundayridesctcsuffolk@gmail.com) if you are willing to take this on. In order to gauge the demand for group rides, if you are interested in joining a ride when we are up and running, could you also contact the appropriate Rides Coordinator to register your interest. These temporary arrangements will start from Thursday 18th and Sunday 21st June.
I appreciate this all sounds rather regimented but, in the current situation, it could prove difficult to accommodate a rider who turns up “on spec” hoping to join a ride. This is just a tentative step back towards normality. It is important that members engage fully with the group coordinators so that rides are as safe as possible Covid wise but still enjoyable none the less. No doubt at some point in the not too distant future we can return to the more relaxed arrangements of the past.
Looking forward to seeing you on the road sometime soon
