Woolfords

Event ride

Event description

Wednesday 17th April 2019 to Woolfords Cottages and Beyond
Hello All,
This Wednesday's run is to the Shale Oil villages of West Lothian including Fauldhouse & Woolfords Cottages and close to the largest, Addiewell, site of James “Paraffin” Young’s distillation factory in the late 1800s.
Assemble from 0950 for a 1000 depart - Meet at the now defunct Blue Goose near the junction of Inglis Green Road & Lanark Road (here)
Route – canal – Heriot Watt (toilets) – Kirknewton – East Calder – Mid Calder – duck through Livingston – on quiet roads to Woolfords Cottages Village Hall (toilet).
Warmer weather is on the way but ….owing to the recent cool eastern airstream which has made lunching alfresco somewhat bracing I have arranged for use of the small village hall and a pop up café run by Marnie Jones, for lunch. However the rather restricted nature of the existing kitchen facilities means the menu is somewhat narrow – apologies if this does not suit you.
Menu; Bacon Roll £2; sweet potato/butternut squash/ginger soup £2; Scones £1.50; Lemon Cake £2.50;
Pot of tea £1 - freshly ground Lavazza coffee £1.50.
(I will take orders for rolls at the outset.)
Or if you prefer bring a packed lunch or box and cox between the two!
After lunch - south – turn right after Auchengray - Forth – B715 – Fauldhouse – Stoneyburn – Five sisters shale bing - Livingston – past James “Paraffin” Young High School - Mid & East Calder – EICA climbing centre for coffee and cake – home via canal to Ratho and beyond.

Cycling in a group does require skill and attention and safety is paramount so do please read and comply with our recently updated guidelines. Safe riding guidelines here .
Please carry two spare inner tubes ensure your bike is roadworthy and do carry suitable clothing, water, pump, basic tool/repair kit, snack food (lunch can be purchased at Woolfords Cottages), money for lunch/coffee stop, and a bike lock.

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees the route you take. Please take note of my phone number 0771 324 7662 in case you get separated from the group.
In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.
While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home. Having said that hopefully no-one would be left in a situation of not knowing how to get home.
An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning. The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members. However non-members are welcome to attend, but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Regards Ben (0771 324 7662)
