The Sugar Loaf Meppershall via Ampthill, Fliton & Campton

Group of people riding
Group ride

Event description

Starting at Haynes Village Hall we go to Clophill and Ampthill making use of the Greensand Cycleway. We have a short coffee break in Ampthill Market Square.

From here, we go along Maulden Road and Greenfield Road to Greenfield and Pulloxhill.  We continue through Pulloxhill along the Barton Road to Higham Gobion. There is a short section on the busy A6 (Bedford Road) to the roundabout with Higham Road (part of the Chilterns Cycle Way).

From here, we follow the Chilterns Cycleway (Higham Road) to Aspley End (Hanscombe End Road) and then onto Pirton (Grove Lane and Priors Hill). In Pirton, we go through Crab Tree Lane and High street, going past the Motte & Bailey and the Fox public houses, and continue through to Holwel.

From Holwel, we turn left onto a short section of the busy Bedford Road towards Henlow, taking the first left towards Lower Stonden and continue  to the Sugar Loaf at Meppershall (our main scheduled stop). Meppershall is the main destination but it may be possible to stop at another venue, e.g. one of the pubs in Pirton.

From The Sugar Loaf, we go along the High St towards Campton and use the underpass to Shefford. We then continue onto Stanford, Ireland and back to Haynes (avoiding the hill from Shefford to Ireland.

The route totals about 35.4 miles.  It may be varied on the day i.e. shortened slightly at the end (by a few miles) if we return directly from Shefford to Haynes. It is one of our longer and newer rides. The Cafe in Ampthill Market Square opens from 08:00hrs, other food establishments (public houses) on route do not open until 12:00 hrs. All riders are responsible for their own safety, should be self sufficient and bring food if required.
