Merryhatton Garden Centre

Event ride

Event description

The ride on the 7th is a 43-mile anticlockwise loop in East Lothian stopping at Merryhatton Garden Centre for lunch.

Please meet at Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh at 9.50am for a 10am start.

We will follow the Esk walkway and proceed to Whitecraig and then on past Smeaton Farm. From there we will make our way to Crossgatehall and then on to Elphinstone. Thereafter we will dip into Tranent for a WC stop (10 miles).

We will then cycle along the B6355 through New Winton and on to Pencaitland. The route will then take us through Samuelston and then skirt round the south side of Haddington passing Colstoun House then north to cross the A1 at Abbey Toll. We will then take the B1347 to Merryhatton Garden Centre for lunch (25 miles) - I have made a booking and will confirm the numbers on the day. After lunch the route takes us through Athelstaneford and then along the B1343. There is a short climb up Bangly Hill and then it’s downhill all the way to the level crossing at St Germains. We will join the coast road at Cockenzie and proceed to Prestonpans where we will take the John Muir Way along the coast back to Musselburgh (43 miles in total). All of the route is on tarmac except for 2 miles on the John Muir Way which is however suitable for all cycles. The forecast currently is: dry, light cloud and a moderate Easterly breeze.

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders. https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees you. Please take note of my phone number 07786 457 742 in case you get separated from the group. Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and tools.

In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home.

An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning. The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members. However non-members are welcome to attend, but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Sandy
