Cowdenbeath

Group ride

Event description

This Wednesday’s run is another chance to foray into Fife. Our destination is the Maxwell Centre in Cowdenbeath. We have a room booked but we do not have access to the kitchen, however they will supply us with flasks of hot water (refillable) and cups.  I will bring tea bags as usual, but some may prefer to bring their own hot drink.  The good news is we do not have to wash up.

We will meet at 9.50 am on Roseburn cycle path on the bridge where it crosses the main Corstorphine road and head out the usual way to the bridge via Dalmeny. We will stop at the Inverkeithing Civic Centre for a comfort break.  Then up and over to Rosyth where we will head up via Pitreavie Business Park to Pittencrieff Park. From there we will head in our groups up the A823 to skirt Townhill Loch.  From there we will head on the cycle path to Kingseat and Cowdenbeath for lunch (23 miles). After lunch we will stay in our groups on the A909 to Mossmorran, right to Donibristle and then a lovely descent via the most picturesque road which will take us past Otterston Loch.  After a short stretch in our groups on the busy A921 we will take the cycle path into Dalgety Bay and back to the bridge via Inverkeithing. Our coffee stop will be in South Queensferry at the Little Bakery.  I plan to head back via the railway path and the Burnshot Road. My lead will finish at Miller and Carter, Cramond Brig. (43 miles in total).  Do take into account the additional return distance from your house to the start and back from the finish. If you intend to return to Roseburn, it’s another 4 miles.

If you wish to shorten this route you can join at Miller and Carter at Cramond Brig or take the train to Inverkeithing and join the group at the Civic Centre toilet stop, where we should reach about 11.10 am. There are also regular trains back from Cowdenbeath.

This route has a 300 m section on a potholed track and 20 m on grass but otherwise on hard surfaces, however care is needed as they may be slippery at this time of year.

The weather on Wednesday currently looks fair and about 8 degrees. Moderate westerly wind.

Do check your emails or the website near the time, as the winter weather may require last minute changes to the route.

Everyone is very welcome to attend but for riders new to the group, our riding guidelines on the following link are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.

https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

You will be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

Do take note of my phone number in case you get separated from the group. 07974113737 and for new riders, I will collect your details prior to the ride.  If you intend to be a regular rider with us please email icectc.lb@gmail.com with your contact details and a contact number in case of emergency, so that we will have your details available.

Please make sure your bike is roadworthy and that you have 2 spare inner tubes and basic tools to change an inner tube.  Please dress for the weather. You will need to have water, packed lunch, money for coffee, a bike lock and lights.  Remember you are riding at your own risk and whilst the group will always try to help out as best as possible with punctures and mechanical problems, you are responsible for looking after yourself and getting yourself home.

See you Wednesday,

Janet
