Broughton

Event ride

Event description

Dear All

The destination for the ride on Wednesday10 April is Broughton.

Meet at Charwood Grill, Fairmilehead at 9.50 a.m. for a 10.00 a.m. departure.

The extent of the ride is just under 57 miles ,with a lunch stop after about 27 miles and coffee break at about 43 miles. Lunch will be al fresco in the park close to the Broughton Primary School. I understand the one shop in the village has closed down, but there is yet the Laurel Bank Tearoom which serves soups , coffees and filled rolls etc.

The morning's ride w ill be by Damhead, Auchendinny, cycle track from there to the south end of Penicuik, the moss road to West Linton where we will have a toilet stop, then joining the A 72 just south of Romano Bridge we follow that road which then becomes the A701, all the way to Broughton.

In the afternoon we head firstly by the charming Dreva road to Dawyck ,Stobo and Lyne , then left on to the A72 ,right by the B7059 Lyne Valley to Romano Bridge and north on the A701 to Whitmuir for coffee. Finally it is probably Leadburn, Howgate, Auchendinny, Roslin and by the cycle path to Gilmerton Dykes and down to Gracemount where the ride finishes. Alternatively from Whitmuir to Auchendinny we could return by Macbiehill and the morning's moss road .

The route is also described in red on Mapometer at:-

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders. https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees you. Please take note of my phone number 0778 6662943 in case you get separated from the group.

Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and tools.

In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home. Having said that hopefully no-one would be left in a situation of not knowing how to get home .

An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning. The ride is primarily for Cycli ng UK members . However non-members are welcome to attend, but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Regards

Duncan
