Michael Jones - Certificate of Merit

Michael Jones - Certificate of Merit

Mike Jones joined the Cyclists' Touring Club in 1969, and he has been a valuable and popular member and Runs Leader in the Merseyside CTC (previously Liverpool District Association) ever since.

Mike has developed an enviable wealth of cycling knowledge and experience which guarantees that any ride he leads will be something special. In particular his runs around 'unexplored' parts of Wirral are a favourite. He is a true tourist, pointing out everything of interest.

Mike first started riding with the Liverpool Section and then with the Social 'A' Section, and very soon he became one of the Runs Leaders and later Section Secretary. He formed a Saturday Section in May 1986 with monthly runs all year, which has been a great success. He also jointly started a Camping Section which ran for nine years. As well as helping with the Sections, Mike is always a very willing participant in cycling events organised by others, such as BCTC heats and Tourist Trials.

Members enjoy reading his articles in the Merseyside Newsletter describing trips at home and abroad. A superb one concerns the atrocious weather encountered in the Wild Wales Challenge Ride in August 1992, on the wettest and windiest day of the year.

Mike is a member of a local photographic society and his expertise with the camera has resulted in a wide range of beautiful photographs taken whilst out cycling. He has shown many of these at numerous slide shows, to the delight of members.

It was no surprise that Mike took on the role as DA Secretary in 1995, and he very conscientiously attended to this valuable and demanding post for the next nine years. This culminated in his being elected for the deserving position of President in 2004, which he held for seven years, proving to be a most accomplished speaker at DA social functions.

Mike has been a stalwart of the Cyclists' Touring Club for over forty years, receiving the John Carline Memorial Plaque in 1994 for services to the DA, and it is fitting that his work should now be recognised by the award of this Certificate of Merit.
