Kathleen McCallum - Certificate of Merit

Kathleen McCallum – already in her sixties – joined the South Bucks DA in 1993.

As a teenager she had cycled with friends and through married life continued to be a utility rider. Now retired from working, she was planning to get a better bike and resume the activity she had enjoyed so much.  She rapidly became a part of the new Midweek section, leading rides and taking part in our first short UK holidays – to the Cotswolds and to the Essex borders – cycling there and back on both occasions, once with stitches in her leg from an injury acquired on the way!

Kath’s talents as an organiser have been demonstrated in two happy cycling holidays in Ireland, when she has arranged air travel, train connections and accommodation for the group. Additionally she’s arranged and led three ‘fixed centre’ holidays for us in the UK.

Her input has not been only with the Midweekers. Prepared to help wherever it’s needed, Kath has been involved with catering on numerous occasions, notably on the Randonnees run by the DA, and at the revived ‘Golden Beeches’ weekends.  She has enjoyed occasional youth hostel weekends with the Chiltern Hills section, and provided a willing pair of hands – as well as a smiling face – at our Indoor Picnics.

Since her arrival on the scene 14 years ago Kath has been a frequent – and witty – contributor to our DA magazine, The Beech Leaf. She is now in her fifth year as Editor, quickly getting to grips with the computer, with which she’s gradually become more adventurous and keen to experiment.  Additionally, she has for nine years been DA Registrar, one of those essential ‘background jobs’ sometimes underestimated.

With her energy and irrepressible enthusiasm, warm and friendly personality, practical wisdom and concern for others, Kathleen McCallum has enriched the lives of South Bucks CTC members in so many ways.
