Every day is different - why I ride to work all year round

Why I like cycle commuting.

One of the many things I like about riding to work every day is the variety it gives you - even if your journey covers the same A to B and back again basic route.

I am lucky that I have a choice of 4 or 5 main routes that I can mix and match different sections of according to the weather, the road conditions, the time of day and so on so my journey is constantly changing. Some parts of my route follow quiet-ish suburban roads and off-road tracks and sometimes I choose to take the country lane option for fitness and scenery reasons.

Occasionally,  if I'm running quite late or it's dark, I will take the main road. But variety of route is not the only variable when you cycle commute - almost always something unexpected will happen or an animal or person will catch your eye as you move past them. Maybe it's someone dressed strangely or a dead owl in the road.

Of course, the same could be said of commuting by car but riding a bike means that such episodes can become an integral part of the journeying, rather than something incidental to it. This morning's journey was pretty incident-free but last night's involved several fire engines and police cars racing to a town-centre fire. I wonder what will happen on the way home tonight?
