The Wirral Wheelers are a Cycling UK Affiliate Group, who took on an early season Challenge Ride through East Cheshire and donated some of the funds to support inclusive cycling at Birkenhead Park.

The group, which consisted of 220 keen cyclists set off on a 70-mile course, through East Cheshire and along the ‘Killer Mile’ to the summit of Mow Cop.

Everyone who took part on the day said they really enjoyed the ride. The Wirral Wheelers are a fantastic group that offers top class group rides at a low cost, their entry fees are calculated on the amount most cyclists would usually spend on a typical day out on their bike, and all the proceeds are then donated to a deserving local cause.

Having used funds from previous challenge rides to purchase adapted cycles for the Eastham Centre, this year they provided Cycling Projects ‘Wheels for All’ team with a new Theraplay Trike for use at their Birkenhead Park Sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Graham Lewis, Wirral Wheelers said: “Each year we use funds, raised from our Challenge Event, to provide the local Community Cycle Hub at Eastham or Cycling Projects with a trike, as these centres provide assistance with the learning and physically disabled to enjoy cycling in a safe environment and are a great benefit to the local area.”

We are truly grateful for the amazing fundraising efforts of the Wirral Wheelers cycling club. Their fundraising efforts have resulted in the purchase of a fantastic low rider recumbent (in club colours) that will be a much-appreciated cycle to the fleet.

Ian Tierney, Cycling Projects said: "We are truly grateful for the amazing fundraising efforts of the Wirral Wheelers cycling club. Their fundraising efforts have resulted in the purchase of a fantastic low rider recumbent (in club colours) that will be a much-appreciated cycle to the fleet at Birkenhead Wheels for All...It’s great to see people already enjoying the benefits of the new cycle and Birkenhead Park.

"It’s also great to see the Wirral Wheelers understanding the need for such provision and being supportive of the inclusive cycling landscape. We hope that this will encourage other clubs to get involved in many ways and supporting the cause of cycling for all abilities. We welcome support through fundraising. promoting the service and just volunteering time at the Wheels for All sessions."

Cycling UK's Cycling Development Officer, Chris Alston, was similary enthused by Wirral Wheelers' decision to help more people cycle, saying:"It'sfantastic to see so many people supporting inclusive cycling and great to see a local club embracing the Cycling UK ethosby using their expertise and fundraising efforts to support their local community and a very worthwhile project.
