Sue Jennings is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2019 list for her instrumental volunteer work supporting and coordinating HSBC UK Breeze activities across Devon and Cornwall.

Sue Jennings undertook Ride Leader training with British Cycling in 2013 and since then, has gone on to lead on over 300 HSBC UK Breeze rides. Most recently, she has also become involved with HSBC UK Guided Rides, offering mixed gender rides in and around Plymouth.

In addition to this, for the last three years, Sue has taken on the role of coordinating volunteers across Devon and Cornwall - offering a more localised source of support to women involved in leading rides. This has had a great effect on other female volunteers and has resulted in them feeling empowered.

Sue said: “I started cycling again as something to do when the surf wasn't up – then I became hooked!

“I dragged my poor husband along with me on cycling tours - the Velodyssey from Hendaye to Roscoff, the Mediterranean to Atlantic along the canals, St Malo to Roscoff, the Rob Roy Trail, the John Muir Trail and lots more.

Cycling keeps me fit - not just physically but also mentally fit.

“When I retired I wanted to do some volunteering, and spreading my love for cycling seemed the perfect mix. I became a Breeze ride leader in 2013 and since then, I have led hundreds of Breeze rides for women. I just love to see women progress from nervous to confident riders.

“Cycling gives me so much freedom to cover the distance, see new places and make new friends. It keeps me fit - not just physically but also mentally fit. When travelling on a bike you can see so much more than in a car.”

Sue was nominated for 100 Women in Cycling by a number of people. One of whom, British Cycling’s Karen Harvey, said: “I have known Sue from a distance for the last four years but recently had the pleasure of meeting her at a training day on the south coast and I was overwhelmed by her passion for cycling, not only as a participant herself, but working for progress to see more and more people out riding.

“Sue has supported Breeze as Devon and Cornwall coordinator for a number of years and has really brought all of the leaders together. She works tirelessly with Sustrans and the Plymouth Cycling Campaign to improve the cycling infrastructure in the local area.

“She is a force to be reckoned with, but also an understanding and patient supporter of women’s cycling, too.”
