Katy Miller is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2019 list for creating Ride Clean, a mobile bicycle cleaning service that is helping more people across London keep their bikes in tip-top condition.

Katy Miller is the founder of Ride Clean, a dedicated mobile bicycle cleaning service operating across London. With time and space at a premium in the capital, Ride Clean - which Katy started in 2018 - helps London’s cyclists keep their bikes running better and safer for longer.

The idea struck her after spending time in Europe working for a bike tour company, where she cleaned bikes and led rides. She then returned to London to a flat and found she had no space to clean a bike. Katy thought surely many other people have the same problem.

Katy takes bookings in south west London at weekends and can often be found at offices around London during the week, where she cleans bikes for people who commute.

Katy herself knows all about the value of having a well-running bike. Her adventures in the saddle include climbing mountains in Malaysia, cycling across Thailand, crossing European mountain passes, as well as countless trips across London simply to get from A to B.

I ride a bike and it lets me escape from the challenges I have faced in life.

Katy said: “Cycling provides me with balance in my life.

“Since starting Ride Clean and riding my great big cargo bike, I’ve found I have found that people voluntarily come up and just tell me stories about cycling and riding bikes. Then people open up and tell you all kinds of things!

“Personally I have always felt free when I ride a bike and it lets me escape from the challenges I have faced in life, whether it’s been from bereavement, redundancy, or depression. Now to be able to help other people get on and ride feels like a gift.”

Katy was nominated for 100 Women in Cycling by Ella Green, who said: “Katy inspires me because she is solving a cycling issue most of us have, but she's going about it in a whole new way.

"She has single-handedly started her own business and is going from strength to strength, cycling on her blue cargo bike (it's very cool!) around London cleaning bikes. She is also enhancing her mechanical skills and working on how she can expand the business.

"Katy donates £1 from each clean to the The Bike Project which is an amazing cycling charity. Her courage to continue with her dream of Ride Clean and all the challenges that running a business brings is so inspiring."
